Abstract

In ancient times, the role of marriage was a key element for the analysis the self-care practices and a Socratic philosophical transformation, mainly due to the temperance, strength, prudence and self-dominion, in general required of the head of a household. Thus, based on a method of philosophical hermeneutical analysis, this article develops the concept of oikonomia related to the importance of marriage for Greek citizens, describes the economic praxis of Greek peasants, and based on Foucault justifies this praxis based on four elements which generate a vital transformation. Concluding that for ancient people, the economy allowed access to a vital process based on elements such as strength, return and conversion, askesis and parrhesia, and salvation.
