Abstract

The present article analyzes the first part of José María Samper’s novel, Florencio Conde, written in 1875
when he was in the liberal party and he was close to resigning and move towards the conservative party.
The first part of Florencio Conde has as central topic the subjects of slavery, mining; as well as, Segundo
Conde as main character, Florencio’s father who is mentioned in the title. It is important to consider that for
Samper, Literature had educative and moralizing aims, and in addition, it served political aims.
