Abstract

Sigmund Freud was considered a revolutionary scientist, as important as Nicolaus Copernicus and Charles Darwin, due to his psychological theories on mind’s operation at a moment when biology could not explain it. At the beginning, psychoanalysis was not accepted by medical professionals, since it was impossible to identify the organic substrata alleged by Freud to take part in psychopathology. Nevertheless, by the mid-20th century, psychoanalysis had become the main foundation of psychiatry, which distanced it from the rest of medical specializations. Biology of mind started substituting psychoanalysis in psychiatric thought, as a result of the discoveries on the action mechanism of psychotropic drugs, the criticisms on the lack of rigor of psychoanalytic method, and the appearance of brief psychotherapies. Inchoate biological confirmation of some Freudian concepts is introduced in this paper, as well as the role of mediator between psychoanalysis and neurobiology, assumed by neuroscience in the understanding of mind and its disorders. © Revista Colombiana de Ciencias Sociales.
