The appearance of additive manufacturing has been and it is one of the greatest industrial revolutions in the last decades. The variety of additive manufacturing technologies allows the creation of very complex shape parts almost impossible to manufacture langsyne in which the waste of material is practically non-existent. Additive manufacturing not only serves to create models but also serves to create functional parts in which metal is one of the most used materials. This paper explores the evolution of the different metal additive manufacturing technologies. It is divided in four sections in which additive manufacturing is defined, the most significant milestones of its brief history are shown along with the most characteristic technologies and materials. To conclude, an analysis of the challenges and future perspectives is presented.Downloads
