Author Guidelines

GUIDE FOR AUTHORS

Summa Iuris accepts articles resulting from investigations in Legal Sciences and Human Rights that respond to the guidelines of this guide for authors; for this reason, the continuity of the postulated articles is subject both to the understanding and acceptance of the authors of the policies of the Journal, and to the fulfillment of the criteria described below.

Academic formation and affiliation of the authors

Articles are received from authors with an academic level of masters, doctorates and postdocs, and postgraduate students who write in co-authorship with professors or qualified researchers in any of the aforementioned levels.

To ensure institutional exogamy, the publication of texts by authors outside the Luis Amigó Catholic University will prevail, without this overriding the quality of the content.

Language and type of articles

The articles must be original and unpublished, written in Spanish, English, Portuguese, French, Italian or German, as long as their structure corresponds to one of the types described by the Administrative Department of Science, Technology and Innovation - Colciencias in the Guide Document for the indexation, issued in February 2010 (page 7), which are cited in this section:

Article of scientific and technological research

Document that presents, in a detailed manner, the original results of completed research projects. The structure contains six important parts: introduction, methodology, results, discussion, conclusions and references.

Reflection article derived from research

Document that presents research results completed from an analytical, interpretative or critical perspective of the author, on a specific topic, using original sources.

Review article

Document result of a finished research where the results of published or unpublished research are analyzed, systematized and integrated, on a field in science or technology, in order to account for the advances and development trends. It is characterized by presenting a careful bibliographic review of at least 50 references.

Although the Magazine privileges the three types of articles described above, it also considers:

Case report

Document that presents the results of a study on a particular situation in order to make known the technical and methodological experiences considered in a specific case. It includes a systematic review of the literature on analogous cases.

Letters to the editor

Critical, analytical or interpretative positions on the documents published in the Journal, which in the opinion of the Editorial Committee constitute an important contribution to the discussion of the topic by the scientific community of reference (Administrative Department of Science, Technology and Innovation - Colciencias in the Guidance document for indexing, issued in February 2010 (pp. 7-8).

Each number contains:

Presentation. Document written by the Director / Editor, who gives an account of the purposes of the Journal and the articles that make up the particular number.

Editorial. Document that gathers orientations and reflections on the thematic domain of the Magazine written by a member of the committees or a guest researcher.

Exceptionally, book reviews will be published, which must be written by a recognized author-researcher and obey texts that are considered important for the disciplines covered by the Journal. By decision of the Editorial Committee, the reviews may take the place of the editorial.

Characteristics of document form

Digitized in Word, in letter size.
The margins used will be 3 centimeters on all sides: top, bottom, right and left of each page.
Arial font, size 12 points.
Text in line spacing to 1.5 lines, justified and without indentation in the first paragraph of each section; from the second paragraph, indent of 0.5 should be used on the left. In tables and figures the font size must be 10 points and the line spacing will be in single space.
All figures and tables are located within the text in the corresponding site. The tables do not have lines separating the cells.
The minimum extension is of 4,000 words and the maximum of 7,000, including tables, illustrations and notes, and excepting references.
The standard followed for citations, references, tables and graphs is APA (6th edition in English, 3rd in Spanish).
The title of the article is written in capital letters, bold and centered. The subtitles are written in bold letters and aligned to the left, with the first word in capital letters -the rest in lowercase, except for proper names-. The between titles will have bold, italic and capital letters only in the initial letter.
Guidelines for writing

In addition to complying with the general guidelines of spelling and grammar of the language in which the article is presented, the wording must be clear and precise, without using euphemisms or discriminations in the language, as stipulated in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA, 2010, pp. 61-84). In that sense, differences in gender, sexual orientation, ethnic or racial group, disability or age should be mentioned only when they are relevant for communication.

It is clear that the list of references does not distinguish between doctrine, jurisprudence and norms, particularly for Summa Iuris the BLUEBOOK criteria are adopted, indicated at the end of this document; the use of the ampersand (&) will be exclusively for quotations and references in English; and the two surnames of the Spanish-American authors must be included, when they are signed in the consulted work.

In this line, it is important to use the italics for the titles of books, magazines, newspapers, movies and television programs, the first time you present a new term or key, the anchors of a scale and for the words in another language.

The use of secondary appointments or "dating appointments" should be avoided; instead it is advisable to quote the original authors.

And the use of the literal quote is recommended to present ideas that require precision or discussion of terms.

The title must have an extension of maximum 10 words; if it includes subtitle, the maximum total extension is 15 words. This identifies the variables and theoretical issues that are investigated. It includes a footnote indicating the name of the research project from which the article is derived, the funding entities, the project code, development phase and start and end dates.

The author's note (for each of the authors) must contain the following: declare their maximum level of academic training and the program from which they graduated, their institutional affiliation, email, registration number in ORCID and their profile in Google Scholar. For the creation of the latter, the following tutorial is recommended: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xc3IUyjgYX8. It is understood that those who sign as authors have contributed substantially to the research. For more information on who deserves authorship, refer to the Publications Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA, 2010, page 18).

The authors must include the bibliographical name and surnames, that is, as they usually sign the scientific publications. The normalization of this data allows the traceability of the author's production.

The summary must be analytical, structured as follows: introduction, method, results and conclusion, and with a maximum of 180 words. In the case of articles of reflection derived from research, the abstract must, in the same way, clearly and succinctly express the objective of the article, the main assumptions from which it departs, the arguments it uses as support and the thesis that structures it. Citations or references should never appear in a summary.

The key words, without exception, must be extracted from the Unesco Thesaurus, available at: http://vocabularies.unesco.org/browser/thesaurus/es/. They should be between three and five, separated by; and written with initial capital.

Authors must translate the title, abstract and keywords into English. It is not recommended to do it through softwares or web pages.

The footnotes are only used for clarifications or digressions, never for references or for important information. When the footnotes are necessary, they must go in Arial font size 10 points.

Structure of the article:

In the Introduction, the research problem is presented, the background and the theoretical framework, the hypotheses and the specific objectives. The method describes how the problem was studied: characterization of the study, the participants, the sampling procedure and data collection techniques. The results of the investigation are reported in the results; if necessary, use tables and figures. In the discussion, the significance of the results is shown in dialogue with the background and the theoretical framework. In the conclusions, the authors own voice is heard, with the implications of the research carried out and the theoretical or practical contribution that it makes to the discipline in which it is framed.

In financing the author (s) relates the institutions that financed the research from which the article is derived. With the Conflict of Interest the author (s) declares the inexistence of a conflict of interest with an institution or commercial association of any kind. Any technical assistance -support functions such as data collection or entry, recruit participants, give suggestions for statistical analysis or reading and analysis of the article- or financial support received -type contract or scholarship-, deserves to add a section of Acknowledgments.

Finally, all the works referred to in the article must be listed in the references. It is important to collate all parts of each reference with the original publication, so that no information is omitted for easy location, including DOI or URL if available.

Structure of citations and references

The citations and references should be adapted to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA, 2010). This implies that there must be full correspondence between one and the other. According to the indications of the APA, only the works actually cited are listed in the references, whether directly or indirectly. It is important to verify that the way authors are signed is always respected, that is, if they do so with two surnames, so they appear both at the time of the appointment and in the list of references. It is also necessary to preserve the order of appearance of the authors in the sources consulted, since it obeys the degree of contribution in the research.

Short textual (or literal) citation: it is when an idea of an author composed of up to 39 words is accurately reproduced. No terms in the text should be altered and if something is specified or entered, it should be put in square brackets. The short quotation is enclosed in quotation marks and then parentheses are opened to include the author's surname (s), the year and the number of the page (s) from which the text idea was taken. These types of quotations are never in italics and all emphasis must be indicated to whom it belongs (if it is in the original or is an emphasis you want to make). Example: "It is infinitely more comfortable, for each one of us, to think that evil is external to us [added italics], that we have nothing in common with the monsters that have committed it" (Todorov, 1993/2004, pp. 163-164).

The corresponding reference:

Todorov, T. (1993/2004). Common people. In Front of the limit (2nd ed., Pp. 129-167). Mexico: Siglo XXI.

Literal or textual quotations of more than 40 words: literal quotations that have more than forty words are written in a separate paragraph and without quotation marks or italics. For purposes of its clear identification for the layout, in the Colombian Journal of Social Sciences they are written in a size of 10 points, with indentation at 2.54 cm. and without quotes. After the appointment, point is written before the reference of the parenthesis and after it.

Example: Mental illness has both personal and family implications. Both coping styles and disease behavior vary depending on the resources that the subject puts into play, among environmental resources the main one is the family, hence the special importance that the family group charges in the treatment of the person with Mental illness. (García Laborda and Rodríguez Rodríguez, 2005, p.45).

Paraphrase or non-literal quote: this type of quote takes the ideas from an original source and reproduces them, but not with the original terms, but with the author's own words. It is used to present general ideas. Example: the works of Matthew Benwell (2015) try to promote a renewed look in the field of social geography.

The corresponding reference:

Benwell, M. (December, 2015). Reframing Memory in the School Classroom: Remem- bering the Malvinas War. Journal of Latin American Studies, 48 (2), 273-300. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1017/S0022216X15001248

Works by multiple authors: when a work by two authors is cited, the last names of both authors should always be included. Example: (García Laborda and Rodríguez Rodríguez, 2005). When the work comprises three to five authors, all authors are cited in the first appearance. In the other quotes of the same text, the first author's surnames are written and ending with et al., Indicating the year and the page. Example: 1st appointment: (García del Castillo, López-Sánchez, Turiñes, García del Castillo-López y Ramos, 2014). 2nd and other citations: (García del Castillo et al., 2014). If the text has six authors onwards, only the surnames of the first author followed by et al. (without italics) from the first appearance of the appointment. Example: (Torres Pachón et al., 2015).

The references corresponding to the three works cited in these examples and organized alphabetically:

Corporate author: when the author is an entity with well-known acronym, in the first appointment the full name is written and in the following it is abbreviated to the acronym known. Example: (American Psychological Association [APA], 2010). Following appointments: (APA, 2010).

Secondary citations: corresponds to quotations from citations, that is, when a text was read by a different author to the person who writes the article. In this case, the author who directly cited the source should be clearly indicated. It is not advisable to use this type of appointment. It is only acceptable to use them when the original work is no longer printed, it is not found through databases and other internet sources or it is not available in Spanish. It is advisable to consult the primary source directly. Example: "Most Sandieguinos opposed strengthening the links between San Diego and Tijuana, and 54% of respondents said they had never visited this city" (Nevins, 2002, p.82, as cited in Muriá and Chávez, 2006, p 39). In that case, the references will go Muriá and Chávez (2006).

Appointments in another language: citations in another language should be translated, usually in a footnote. You can quote the translation in the body of the text, or leave the quotation in the original language. In this case, it should be written in italics.

Quotations from interviewees: the original material, the product of interviews, focus groups or conversations, is not included in the list of references. When quoting in the body of the text, we proceed as follows: (Codification of the informant, personal communication, exact date of the communication). Example: "Our stories are similar, but not the same" (P5, 3: 3, personal communication, September 25, 2015).

Self-citations: citations referring to previous works of the author or authors of an article are not recommended, because "The self-test is equivalent to self-reward for recognitions that others should do, if an author is worthy of such distinction" (Valderrama Méndez, 2008, p.1). The reference of this appointment is:

List of references: The list of references is written at the end of the text in alphabetical order, without bullets, and with French indentation. Next, it details how the main sources that are used in an article are referenced.

Books. It consists of: Author's surname, initials of the author's name. (Year). Title of the book. City: Editorial. The title is written below. Note how the editorial words, editorial background or bookstore are omitted. Examples:

Cisneros Estupiñán, M. and Olave Arias, G. (2012). Writing and publication of scientific articles: discursive approach. Bogotá: Ecoe.

Todorov, T. (1993/2004). In front of the limit. 2nd ed. Mexico: Siglo XXI.

Book with editor, compiler, director or organizer. After the name of the person in charge, the degree of responsibility is stated: if it is an editor, it is written (ed.); if compiler (comp.), director (dir.), organizer (org.). Example:

Diaz, F., Bordas, M., Galvão, N., and Miranda, T. (orgs.). (2009). Inclusive education, deficiência and social context: contemporary questões. Salvador: Federal University of Bahia.

Edition number In cases where between the first publication of the book and the one read by the authors of the text, an important time has elapsed, the first date of publication and the consulted version is indicated, as follows: (1993/2004). If the material does not have a publication date, the abbreviation (s.f.) will be written. If it is about to be published, it is written (in press).

Works with eight authors or more. Include the names of the first six, then write ellipses and the last author. Example:

Torres Pachón, A., Jiménez Urrego, Á. M., Wilchez Bolaños, N., Holguín Ocampo, J., Rodríguez Ovalle, D.M., Rojas Velasco, M.A., Cárdenas Posada, D. F. (January-June, 2015). Chapters of the book. The author of the part or chapter is cited, proceeding in the same way as in authors of complete books, followed by the word En and then the initials of the full names and surnames of the authors or compilers and the title of the book, then of which are the pages that comprise the consulted chapter. Example:
