Gender and masculinity studies, as well as mental health, have been growing in academic and political interest over the last decade. Through the premise that adherence to social norms of masculinity impacts mental health, a field of study has been developing that links masculinity with well-being. In this work, we thematically and critically analyze research papers on individuals or groups focusing on mental health and the processes of support for men. A narrative review of papers obtained from the Web of Sciences database is conducted. The results are grouped into three thematic clusters that account for the determinants of change in mental health: strategic valuation of masculinity, and critical observations. These results allow for a discussion on the persistence of individualistic views and the need to think about the problem in a complex and interdisciplinary way
