Abstract

Quetiapine is a second generation antipsychotic that is widely used in treating several psychiatric illnesses, including those related to substance abuse. Regardless of its efficiency and approved use, there are several reports on its potential abuse.
In this article there is the first case in Hispanic America, there is likewise a literature review that references the case reports, epidemiological studies and animal model studies. The risky use or search pattern-the compulsive use of quetiapine is reported in vulnerable individuals with a history of disorders due to substance use, usually related to cocaine. There is a
discussion regarding this phenomenon. Regardless of the fact that evidence on this phenomenon comes from preclinical studies, not necessarily from better sources, the case reports should be taken into account in patient assessment regarding how useful this drug is and the possible risks in treating patients with substance consumption related disorders.
